There are many tourist attractions throughout the historic town of Glenelg. The town began in 1836 when the colonist first arrived. Today, it is both a historic town and a popular tourist attraction.
There are many great places to visit while there, including historical sites and fun destinations such as beaches and amusement parks.
1. Glenelg Beach
If you are looking for a classic tropical destination, then Glenelg Beach is your place. If you like volleyball, then this is the place for you as it is one of the most popular sports to play on the beach. The beach is also surrounded by shops and cafes.
Plus, there are a variety of activities you can do, such as swimming with wild dolphins, jet skiing, and even a segway tour!
2. Proclamation Trail
If you want to emerge yourself into the history of Glenelg, then you can walk the Proclamation Trail which is a self-guided tour throughout the town.
The tour will take you through eight historical sites including the famous “Old Gum Tree”—where a British governor, John Hindmarsh, announced the establishment of the South Australian colony.
3. Haigh’s Chocolates
For my chocolate lovers out there, Haigh’s Chocolates is a family-owned chocolate shop that first opened in 1915. The chocolate shop is constantly making new types of chocolates and they even offer a tour where you see their chocolate-making process!
Their selection of chocolates continues to grow with some of their most popular being their “Dark Honeycomb Block” and a variety of frog-shaped chocolates.
4. The Beachouse
If you have kids, then going to The Beachouse is a must. The Beachouse is a family amusement house for all ages. They have a water park, bumper boats, mini golf, an arcade, and more!
There is no entry fee; however, the Beachouse has an arcade-style system where each attraction or ride cost a certain amount of “credits.” They do offer certain deals where you can have as much as 120 minutes of open access fun.
5. The Bay Discovery Center
If you want to learn more about South Australia’s history, then the Bay Discovery Center is the museum to visit. The museum shows the history of not only the colonists but also the aboriginal people.
The museum features an impressive 10,000 historical objects and artifacts for any to see. The entry fee is relatively low, and it will result in hours of entertainment and interesting facts!
Final Thoughts
All in all, the beautiful town of Glenelg is a prime spot to visit and is full of historical sites and fun destinations that will easily keep you entertained during your time there.
